YOU CAN ALMOST SEE the feathers quiver in these lifelike sketches and watercolor portraits of a (left) and a by the late, acclaimed Canadian bird artist . Printed on art paper in National Wildlife’s October–November 1978 issue, these commissioned pieces of framable art ran “as a gift to members.” Working from live field observations, Shortt traveled the world, sketching and painting some 2,000 species and illustrating more than 20 books. A keen observer of birds’ habits and songs, he wrote that he had lived a life “engrossed by the expression of birds.”
