DISPLAYING THE CLEVER ENGINEERING of evolution, a prepares to pierce a bloom of lion’s ear mint for nectar, its decurved beak perfectly built for the task. Photographer Mike Anderson saw several of these vivid birds feasting in a field near Kenya’s Kisumu Marsh, where morning sun melted the field beyond his lens into a golden glow. “There’s an incredible connection between bird and bloom,” Anderson says. “Seeing such interconnectedness should teach us to be cautious before tampering with nature.”
