WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Monarch Action, Recovery, and Conservation of Habitat (MONARCH) Act, reintroduced by Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) with Representatives Leon Panetta (D-Calif.) and Salud Carbajal (D-Calif.), will provide vital resources to conserve, create and protect western monarch habitat.
The bill would authorize $12.5 million annually for conserving western monarch populations and an additional $12.5 million annually to implement the Western Monarch Butterfly Conservation Plan, a critical component to restoring declining populations.
“The monarch migration is one of the most truly unique wonders of the animal world and this bill is the missing link in our mission to create habitat and protect the species for generations to come,” said Mike Leahy, senior director of wildlife, hunting and fishing policy at the National Wildlife Federation. “We thank Sen. Merkley and Representatives Panetta and Carbajal for their steadfast commitment to preserving the beloved monarch butterfly.”
