WASHINGTON, D.C. — The withdrawal of an interim guidance instructing agencies on how to account for the clear and worsening impacts of greenhouse gases in the National Environmental Policy Act process will cause confusion for federal agencies while harming wildlife and people. NEPA is a bedrock law that helps federal agencies understand the impact of large-scale projects, and failing to properly account for the proven impact of carbon and greenhouse gases will only result in increased lawsuits and confusion in implementation.

“Ignoring the realities and impacts of the worsening climate crisis will keep us from building robust, prosperous, and safe infrastructure for communities and wildlife,” said Jim Murphy, senior director of legal advocacy at the National Wildlife Federation. “This action not only ignores the law, but the fact that runaway climate change costs us all and addressing it responsibly benefits us all. Instead of gutting environmental reviews, federal agencies need more funding and clear direction to more effectively and efficiently evaluate and green light clean energy projects.”
