Great Lakes Legislation Returns to the House for Critical Action

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The reintroduction of the to the U.S. House of Representatives renews critically necessary efforts to secure vital funding for the protection and restoration of the Great Lakes, which support the health and well-being of millions of people and wildlife alike.

"The reintroduction of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative bill is a critical advancement for the Great Lakes, as well as the millions of people and wildlife whose water and way of life depend upon them," said Rebecca Meuninck, Great Lakes regional executive director for the National Wildlife Federation. "We are grateful to Representative Dave Joyce (R-Ohio) for reintroducing this effort to safeguard and restore the Great Lakes. This is a pivotal moment, and we urge lawmakers to seize the opportunity to invest in these waters and the communities they support by swiftly passing the bill through the House and Senate."

The bill, which previously cleared the Senate in 2024, stalled in the U.S. House of Representatives, prompting members of the Great Lakes delegation to restart the legislative process in the new Congress.

The GLRI has addressed pressing challenges like harmful algal outbreaks, habitat loss, and invasive species. Since its inception, the initiative has seen such as the delisting of several areas of concern and the protection and restoration of over 460,000 acres of habitat.
